The New York Times and other media outlets reported Saturday that a container ship has been working for days to contain a fire involving the 800 tons of lithium-ion batteries in its cargo hold. The ship - the Genius Star XI - departed Vietnam on Christmas Day bound for San Diego, but was re-routed to Alaska by the US Coast Guard after the fire broke out on the open Pacific Ocean.
It is currently anchored 2 miles offshore Dutch Harbor, Alaska, while firefighters and crew attempt to contain the blaze in the hold containing the batteries.
