In a ruling that could impact dozens of legal actions in what has become a coordinated lawfare effort to damage the US oil and gas industry, a City Circuit Judge in Baltimore, MD tossed out a local government’s lawsuit that sought to hold oil companies financially liable for alleged impacts of climate change on Thursday.
In an opinion that begins with the Judge affirmatively stating her view that “There is no question that global warming and climate change are wreaking havoc on our environment,” Judge Videtta Brown ruled that Baltimore’s lawsuit “goes beyond the limits of Maryland state law,” and granted dismissal to the defendants in the case, led by London-based major oil company BP.
