The White House says it doesn’t support banning nat gas stoves but still wants the authority to ban nat gas stoves just in case:
This week the House was supposed to vote on HR 1615—the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act and HR 1640—the Save our Stoves Act. HR 1615 prohibits the Consumer Protect Safety Commission from banning natural gas stoves and HR 1640 prohibits the Department of Energy from regulating natural gas stoves out of existence. These votes didn’t happen this week because the Shiite Faction of the House Republicans wanted to send a message to House leadership over the deal Speaker McCarthy cut with President Biden to lift the debt ceiling and blew up the Rule for the two bills. When the elephants fight the grass gets trampled – the REINS Act which was also part of the package got trampled as well. Since this is such a priority for the Conference, we have no doubt these bills will be voted in soon and will certainly pass the House.
When the White House issues a veto threat, they issue a Statement of Administration Policy (SAP) such as the one linked here. This SAP one is amusing because it is so dishonest. The first paragraph states, “While the Administration has been clear that it does not support any attempt to ban the use of gas stoves…” and then the rest of the SAP is an explanation of why they should have the ability to ban gas stoves.
