I suppose this should not come as any real surprise to anyone who has paid attention to Ursula Von Der Leyen’s career. She’s essentially been Europe’s version of Hillary Clinton, a career opportunist willing to assume any position and destroy any freedoms needed to advance her ambitions.
Von Der Leyen styled herself as a “conservative” in order to be named defense minister in her native Germany, but then transformed herself into a Greta Thunberg-style climate alarm zealot in seeking to be named president of the European Commission, the policy setting arm of the EU, in 2019. On Monday, Von Der Leyen announced her bid for a second term in that role, and, as reported by Politico EU, she says her ambition for a second term will be to make Europe more “competitive,” which Politico says amounts to “a catch-all word that in 2024 means more military might, more Europe First purchases and more industry-friendly climate rules.”
Thus, with this nasty climate emergency somehow having now been resolved - or at least shoved into the background due to bad public approval numbers - Ms. Von Der Leyen seeks to again reinvent herself as a “conservative” and a military hawk. Watching her career progress is like sitting courtside at a pickle ball match.
