Playing games with the SPR
Republicans and most of the public were understandably ticked off last year when the Biden Administration blatantly used a massive release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to avoid a Democratic wipeout in the mid-term elections. In response, House Republicans will pass a bill today to prohibit future releases from the SPR unless the release is accompanied by a plan to increase oil and gas leasing on federal lands. The White House has threatened to veto the bill because protecting Democratic seats in Congress is more important than energy security.
