The Slow-Motion Budget Train Wreck
The authorization for the federal government to spend money expires in nine days and the House Republicans are still struggling to come together on a plan for how to extend the funding. A plan will be worked out – it must be and while there might be a short lapse in appropriations (i.e., a “government shutdown”), but it will likely be short.
The House Republicans are having an important fight among the family and trying to get the federal government’s fiscal house in better order, but it’s very difficult. In a perpetual game of Whack-A-Mole, each day brings a different set of Republican members of Congress who decide to block passage of a continuing resolution. House Republicans will be blamed regardless so they need to figure out a path forward to arresting runaway federal spending and do so quickly.
